I would eat Mediterranean food everyday if I could. I wonder if I’d get bored with it or my hubby may not want it all the time. Anyways, there is just something about the flavors that just make my mouth happy. I especially love Classic Homemade Hummus. It is truly a classic side dish or appetizer. The containers at the store do not compare anything to the taste of homemade.

What is Hummus?
Classic Homemade Hummus starts with Chickpeas or aka Garbanzo Beans. Just like Classic Guacamole, this hummus recipe has simple ingredients. The flavors are amazing and have good nutrition as well.
Classic Hummus is a side that comes from the Mediterranean. It pairs well with all of their dishes. Chicken, lamb, falafel are all great proteins to start as a base. The Greeks also eat hummus with rice, vegetables and tzatziki. The flavors truly are amazing!

How To Make Classic Hummus?
- Add the olive oil to your blender.
- Combine the chick peas and Tahini to the blender. Blend until creamy.
- Next, add the remaining ingredients and blend all that together.
- Now, pour the hummus into a pretty serving chip and dip tray.
- Garnish with paprika and/or chopped parsley. If you have any chick peas left over, add those on top as well. I like to add a few Kalamata olives.
See how easy that was. You can definitely by-pass the containers at the deli and make your own. Besides, the popular brands have soybean oil in theirs.
Are Chickpeas and Garbanzo Beans the Same?
Yes, they are the same legume. Chickpeas was named after the English speaking regions. Garbanzo Beans is more commonly used in Spanish speaking regions. They are a good source of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. A great addition as a side to a well balanced meal.

What to Serve With Classic Hummus
Classic Hummus is known to be served with fresh baked warm pita. I can always tell when I go to a Greek restaurant if the pita bread is baked fresh. We have an authentic Greek community in Tarpon Springs (a few hours from where we live) that is so delicious. You can buy their pita and take it home. It freezes nicely too. As much of a baker as I am, I might have to try making them sometime.
Something else I love to dip in classic hummus is Masa Chips. They are made with organic corn, beef tallow and sea salt. Masa Chips remind me of a Dorito, but much much better! They are also guilt free. I used to want to eat an entire bag of Doritos. It’s been over 20 years since I had one. It must be the “crunch” that we like. I also believe the seed oils they are cooked in are addicting to our brains.
Grab a bag and I promise you will love them! Your boy will love them too! Masa Chips come in different flavors too. Click the button below and receive 20% off your first order. I have my orders set up on a monthly subscription. Very convenient and you can change items anytime you want.

Classic Homemade Hummus
Equipment

Ingredients
- 2 cups Chickpeas (cooked or canned)
- 4 cloves Garlic (minced)
- 1 Lemon (squeezed)
- 1/4 cup Water
- 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1/4 cup Tahini
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Paprika
- 1 tsp Parsley (finely chopped)
Instructions
- Add the olive oil to your blender.
- Combine the chick peas and Tahini to the blender and blend until creamy.
- Next, add the remaining ingredients and blend it all together.
- Now, pour the hummus into a pretty serving bowl.
- Garnish with paprika and/or chopped parsley. If you have any chick peas left over, add those on top as well. I like to add a few Kalamata olives.
Notes
- If you want to use dried chickpeas, just make sure you soak them the night before. Cook them in a pot of boiling water and simmer for a few hours or until fork tender. I would peel the skin off as the hummus will be extra creamy.
- If using canned chickpeas, you’ll want to drain them for this recipe.
