There’s quite a debate about consuming salt. I read and study all the time about the differences in the variations of salt. I’m excited to dive in today and share with you The Truth About Real Salt.
What Is Salt?
Salt is a crystalline compound NaCl that consists of sodium chloride is abundant in nature, and is used especially to season or preserve food or in industry. Salt is the main source of sodium and an essential nutrient in our body.
We all need sodium for fluid balance, muscle, and nerve function. So why does it get such a bad wrap? If it’s good for us, then how can it be bad for us?
Facts
The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day. Most Americans consume way too much sodium. The SAD (Standard American Diet) diet has become a household name in most homes and sadly, all of the processed and boxed foods are what a lot of people are buying. Most people are still consuming white table salt. You know the one. A blue canister that is refined/processed and has no nutritional value at all.
Our bodies require sodium; however, most people consume too little or too much, which can make them sick either way. Using the right salt on a daily basis makes a big difference. A good balance of minerals is necessary for our heart, kidneys, and liver.
Symptoms of Too Little and Too Much
Too Little
Consuming too little can come with its own set of problems. See below for sodium deficiency:
- Muscle Cramps
- Dehydration
- Hypothyroidism
- Headaches
- Lethargy or Weakness
- Confusion
Too Much
Too much in the diet comes with another whole host of problems:
- High Blood Pressure
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Kidney Disease
- Osteoporosis
Benefits
What is Real Salt? It’s unprocessed and unrefined. Nothing has been added nor anything has been removed. It is mined here in the USA and is left in its natural state. The deposit occurs with over 60+ natural trace minerals which give it its own unique color, unique flavor, and numerous health benefits. Because this deposit comes from an ancient sea bed, nature created this long before the earth experienced any pollution or contaminants that are troubling our oceans today. Mineral Analysis
Let’s look into all the health benefits of consuming Real Salt. As someone who has hypothyroidism and adrenal issues, I use it daily to support both. I take 1/4 teaspoon in the morning in a small glass of water. If I’m outside in my garden working or doing anything strenuous, I’ll take a little more after lunch to replenish my electrolytes. Check out the analysis below of all the trace minerals that are included.
Real Salt Uses
I love using the real stuff any chance I get. When something is this good for you, you’ll want to consume it all the time. See how I use it in my Homestead Pantry and everyday life.
- Baking
- Cooking/Grilling
- Homemade Bath Salts
- Toothpaste
- Adrenal Boost
- Replenish Electrolytes
Another great use is for curing meats. This is an ancient old way of preserving meats. They didn’t have freezers and refrigerators back then so using salt to cure the meat was the best way to keep food stored up, especially during the winter. I learned how to preserve a roast at the Homesteaders of America conference in April. Truly an amazing process! Here’s a great article from Melissa K. Norris on How To Cure Meat.
