Homemade Cole Slaw is so easy to make with just a few simple ingredients. We eat it year round here. I love mixing both green and purple cabbage along with fresh carrots from the garden. It’s the perfect side dish to so many meals.
How To Make Cole Slaw
Well, it’s rather quite simple. I try to find local (if I’m not growing it) cabbage when it’s in season here. It tastes the freshest. You just need a few ingredients.
- First, wash and tear off the outer leaves of your cabbage.
- The next step, you can either use a knife or a mandolin. You’ll want to slice the cabbage into shreds or small strips. Add it to a bowl.
- Next, take your carrot and grate it. Now, add that to the bowl.
- Add mayonnaise and sugar and give it a good stir. Salt and pepper to taste.
- Sprinkle with smoked paprika.
- Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for a few hours.

What Goes Good With Cole Slaw
We eat cole slaw a lot around here in the south. It’s kind of a staple at any family gathering. Cole slaw goes great piled on homemade sloppy joe’s, burgers, pulled pork sandwiches, or any kind of BBQ, really.
It pairs nicely with fresh corn on the cob, pasta salads, roasted potatoes or baked beans.

- Salt & Pepper (to taste)
- Paprika
Instructions
- Wash and tear off the outer leaves of the cabbage.
- Next, slice the cabbage into thin shreds or pieces. Add to a bowl.
- Grate the carrots and add those to the same bowl.
- Combine the mayonnaise and sugar and give it a good stir. Now, add the salt and pepper, stir again.
- Sprinkle the top with paprika.
- Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for a few hours.
Notes
- Feel free to use a sharp knife or mandolin to slice the cabbage.
- I’ve only used coconut sugar but you can substitute it for a sweetener of your choice.
- I love combining both red and green cabbage. You can use (2) small cabbages if you do it this way.
- If you want to double the recipe for a large crowd, use larger cabbages and double the recipe. We like our slaw creamy but not too thick. Adjust the mayonnaise to your liking.
