When I quit eating at fast-food restaurants years ago, I have to admit I missed eating french fries. They are truly addicting. Maybe it’s the oil they’re cooked in, maybe it’s the actual potato. One thing for sure is that I wanted a healthier fry. These Grass-Fed Beef Tallow Fries fit the bill. Read on to find out how easy these are to make.

What Are Beef Tallow Fries?
Fries cooked in beef tallow are my favorite! Tallow has a high smoke point, up to 400 degrees. The potatoes can be deep fried or baked in the oven. The outside is crispy and the inside of the fries are so soft and fluffy.
How to Make Grass-Fed Beef Tallow Fries
When you see how easy these fries are to make, you won’t want to go through another drive-thru.
- Wash and cut your potatoes. Peeling is optional, although, you will be eliminating vital nutrients if you do end up removing the peel.
- Place potatoes in a bowl.
- Scoop 2 tbsp of grass-fed beef tallow in the bowl.
- Using your hands, massage the tallow and salt/pepper until the potatoes are evenly coated.
- Spread the fries on to a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
- Bake at 400 degrees in the oven for 25 minutes. Turn the fries over.
- Bake for another 25-30 minutes. Once the fries are golden in color, they are ready.
- Pull out of the oven and allow to cool for a bit.
- Eat the fries just like they are, sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley or extra salt.
- They are even delicious dipped in Buttermilk Ranch Dressing or Organic Ketchup.

How to Cook Tallow Fries
When using grass-fed beef tallow, you can either oven or deep fry the potatoes. I like them either way. If you have a potato fry slicer, then deep fry the potatoes. This would be good, especially if you really like fast food french fries.
Oven
The oven will have a crispy outside with a soft fluffy inside. It’s also a less mess as when you are done, just throw the parchment paper away. Also, you can usually just wipe down the baking sheet until next time.
Deep Fried
Deep frying potatoes in beef tallow isn’t like McDonald’s cooking their fries. Most fast food restaurants cook in vegetable or canola oil. Those are called seed oils. They are horrible for us and one of the reasons I stopped going to places like Chick-fila.
Since beef tallow is rendered fat from the cow, the nutrients are so powerful. They can be deep fried in an actual deep fryer. If you have a deep skillet, you can fry the potatoes in that as well.
Air Fried
Can these potatoes be air fried? Yes, they can! Just follow your manufacturer’s manual on how to cook potatoes. Just coat them in the tallow, season them and then place them in your air fryer.

Why Use Beef Tallow?
Beef Tallow is fat that has been rendered from a cow. Many consider the best quality beef tallow to be rendered from the fat around the kidneys. However, it can also be made from rendering other fat. This fatty tissue around the kidneys stores many nutrients, especially when the cattle is grass-fed.
Tallow rendered from grass-fed cattle provides some of the following nutrients:
- Vitamins A, D, K, E and B12
- Choline
- CLA
- Other fatty acids, including oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid and others
So, beef tallow is healthy for us. There was a time that McDonald’s, yes, McDonald’s, used beef tallow to cook their fries in. Back then, tallow was affordable. Many other fast food restaurants used it too. Shortly after, big companies started creating vegetable oils, also known as, seed oils. Grass-Fed Beef Tallow Fries
Ingredients
- 5 lbs Yukon Gold Potatoes
- 2 tbsp Grass-Fed Beef Tallow
- Salt & Pepper (to taste)

Notes
- Use a 10 lb bag of potatoes for a larger crowd.
- You can peel the potatoes or leave the skins on for added nutrition.
- Dip the fries in an organic (or homemade) ketchup or buttermilk ranch dressing.
- Sprinkle with cayenne pepper if you like things hot or feta cheese for a twist.
