History of Hawaiian Pizza
Hawaiian Pizza didn’t originate in Hawaii. Shockingly, it came from Canada. It dates back to the mid-1950s. Credit for creating and popularizing the dish is typically given to Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant who settled in Canada. Panopoulos co-owned Satellite Restaurant with his brothers in Ontario, near the border. It was also notably close to Detroit, where pizza had already begun to establish a foothold. After a trip to Naples, Panopoulos was inspired to add pizza to the menu. Pizza was still a relatively new dish in North America and had not yet gained widespread popularity. Furthermore, most versions were served with simple toppings like mushrooms, bacon, or pepperoni. Panopoulos was also experimenting with new Chinese-American dishes. These included sweet and sour chicken, which notably called for pineapple. At that time, he decided to branch out with his pizza toppings, too. In 1962, he added canned pineapple to one pizza. He also added ham. It’s unclear if this was done right away or established a little later. With these additions, the Hawaiian pizza as we know it was born.

Hawaiian Pizza Ingredients
Hawaiian Pizza starts with homemade pizza dough. You can certainly buy store bought dough but it’s so easy to make your own. Plus, it’s better for you. Toppings include a red pizza sauce, diced pineapple, Canadian bacon or ham and lots f mozzarella cheese. The flavors of the sweet pineapple mixed with the ham and sauce are simply amazing. I had some leftover shredded chicken so I added that to mine as well. The mozzarella makes it so ooey gooey.

How to Make Hawaiian Pizza
Hawaiian Pizza is made with simple ingredients. The combination of these few items really just melt in your mouth. The flavors are amazing!
Make Sure To Use My Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe!
- Roll your dough out on a clean floured surface. Depending on what you will be baking your pizza in, it should be close to a 12” circle. Alternatively, you could stretch it out thinner for a rectangle shape.
- Sprinkle cornmeal on the bottom of the iron skillet. Place the dough on top.
- Now, spread the olive oil evenly. Just lightly coat it on the dough.
- Next, add the red sauce on the dough.
- Start adding your toppings and top with freshly grated mozzarella cheese.
- Place in a 400 degree pre-heated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Why Use Homemade Pizza Dough
Homemade Pizza Dough is much better for you than what you will find in the grocery store. I’ve even seen boxes on the shelves where you can make your own dough. I make my dough with fresh milled hard white flour. It’s so nutritious and makes a yummy pizza crust.
I do use another option that isn’t actually grinding the flour. Sometimes, I run out if I’ve been baking a lot. I buy from a few grain mills that use a Unifine (stone milled process) mill. They mill the flour in small batches and its shelf life is longer than fresh milled flour. All of the nutrients are still intact. It’s a great alternative if you are like me and run out. It’s also a good choice if you’re not ready to dive into the world of grinding your own flour. You are still getting all the nutrition from both. I love this Heritage Flour or this Rouge De Bordeaux Flour.

Tip for Making Hawaiian Pizza
I love using cast iron skillets for pretty much anything, but they really make the crust on pizza extra delicious. To prevent your crust from burning, sprinkle corn meal on the bottom of the skillet first. Then, place the dough on top of it.

Hawaiian Pizza
Equipment
- Cast Iron Skillet
Ingredients
- 1 Disc of Homemade or Store Bought Pizza Dough
- 1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 6 oz Pizza Sauce
- 15 oz Diced Pineapple
- 7 oz Canadian Bacon
- 2 cups Freshly Grated Mozzarella Cheese
- 1 tbsp Cornmeal (optional)
- Salt & Pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Roll your dough out on a clean floured surface. Depending on what you will be baking your pizza in, it should be close to a 12 circle. Alternatively, you could stretch it out thinner for a rectangle shape.
- Sprinkle cornmeal on the bottom of the iron skillet. Place the dough in the skillet.
- Now, spread the olive oil evenly. Just lightly coat it on the dough.
- Now, spread the pizza sauce evenly on the dough.
- Start adding your toppings and top with freshly grated mozzarella cheese.
- Place in a 400 degree pre-heated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.
Notes
- If you have a thicker crust, pre-bake it in the oven for about 10 minutes. Otherwise, it will still be doughy inside. Pull it out of the oven, add your toppings and then follow the directions in the recipe for baking.
- If you want to use a rectangle pan, just roll the dough into that shape. It might be a little thinner crust or you can use extra dough if you like it thicker.
- You can use leftover chicken like I did. Adds a little more protein and flavor.
- I also like the flavors of crumbled bacon and red onion on my Hawaiian Pizza.
