Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year! I love the colors of orange, yellow, green and brown. The comfort of soups and chili, homemade bread, baking all the Fall things – it all just fills my heart. I also enjoy the cooler weather and my absolute favorite is the changing of the leaves. Follow along and make your home cozy with my fall guide.
So, as much as I love all things about Fall, the only thing Florida is lacking is the cooler weather and the changing of the leaves. I’m originally from West Virginia, but I moved around a lot as a child. My dad served in the US Army, which took us pretty much in the southern part of the East Coast (I was very fortunate, though to live three years in Alaska.) Basically, I don’t let this get me down because I always find someplace a few states north of me to go visit during the month of October. Oh, and I forgot to mention, my other most favorite part on top of the leaves is picking apples.
Reasons to Love the Fall Season
- Summer always just seems so busy. I feel like we “go go go” on vacations, water parks, barbecues – all the things. Fall is the perfect time for me to slow down. Yes, there’s all kinds of fun stuff to do, but it’s not like a rush like Summer is. Do you resonate with that too?
- One part of slowing down for me means I spend more time in my kitchen. I light a candle, put on a good movie, bake an apple pie, can up some apple butter or make a loaf of pumpkin bread. I love making several batches and taking them to neighbors, loved ones or friends.
- It’s a good time to get outdoors. I love hiking in the mountains but if I’m here in Florida, I’ll go more on nature walks. We have an abundance of state parks with beautiful topography. Not mountains, but still very pretty.
- Fall produce is prime for the pickin’. Whether I’m growing it in my garden or I hit a local market. Therefore, my favorites this time of year are butternut and acorn squash. Perfect in soups, stew, chili or as a side.
- Gather around a fire with friends and family. Plaid blankets, a potluck supper, some yummy desserts and if you’re musically inclined, bring a guitar for some campfire songs.

How to Make Your Home Cozy for Fall
- Keep your colors neutral and throw in some pops of Fall colors – orange, green, yellow, and brown. I love using foliage or pumpkins to achieve this effect.
- Start a collection of something that you love. I don’t go out and buy new things every year. I’ve had most of my Fall decor for a good 15 to 20 years. Take care of it. It really never goes out of style.
- Buy pillow inserts. I like either 18 x 18 or 20 x 20 sizes. Those are the standard pillows that you’ll find all kinds of covers for. This way, you don’t have to store tons of pillows ha ha. You can usually find pillow covers pretty inexpensive too.
- Change your Fall decor that you have now and put it in a different location every year. It makes me feel like I have new pieces haha. Seriously, move things around in different rooms. Undoubtedly, when we don’t see it all the time, it makes it feel more special.
- Buy things on clearance at the end of the season. This way you’ll already have something new the next year.
- Lastly, throw blankets are pretty inexpensive and can add so much coziness to your living room or bedroom. What’s more cozier than snuggled up with a blanket watching a good movie?

Some of My Favorite Fall Things
- I love using candle ring holders as small wreaths. You can put a candle on top of it or hang them on old cabinets. However, I do have a few door wreaths around the house that I bought on clearance when we finished building our home several years ago. You can also have a simple grapevine or eucalyptus wreath for your front door and just change the ribbon out.
Candle Ring Holder (mini wreath) – This is a 2-pack. I might need to grab these!
- Floral picks and sprays make a big impact. Pick these up either locally or I find some good deals online. I’ve had most of mine for years as they don’t go out of style. If you can grow sunflowers or hydrangeas, dry these and use them year after year.
- Real or Faux Pumpkins – Obviously, faux will last from year to year haha. I’ve had these cute resin mini pumpkins for almost 20 years. That’s a long time but I seriously look forward to pulling them out every year. I have a set of orange, brown, green and white. Out of all 8, I’ve only broke 1 over the years. That’s pretty good. I’m also creating tradition. My kids notice them every year and one day, they’ll inherit them.
- Artwork – Swap out your normal everyday wall art for some deeper more moody prints. You can find them locally or online as well. If you buy the same size as the one you’re taking down, just use the same frame. You can even store the prints in the back and just swap around seasonally.
Saving the Best for Last
- Candles – Last but not least, who doesn’t love a good candle? Buy the ones that are clean though. A lot of candles are filled with toxins and we don’t need to be breathing all that. I love a good beeswax or soy based, with chemical free scents.
These are one of my favorite candles I have ever found! If you are local, I sell them at my booth at Trader Mae’s. So many wonderful Fall scents (Hello Fall, Pumpkin Spice, Hello Pumpkin and more) right now. They are made in the USA and they do not have any chemicals in them.
I thought this Warm and Cozy candle would be fun for this post. They even sell some really cute mugs!
I hope this new Fall season embarks a sense of stillness and peace for you – cooler temps, cooking more at home, gathering on the front porch with friends and family and sitting around the fire drinking warm apple cider. What are you most excited for about his new season?
